Scherzo del Maligno was commissioned by Louis Raymond-Kolker for his collaboration with the LNK New Music Collective for 5 new works for double second steel pans in the summer of 2018.
The work is grounded in reflections that I have had over the years during seasons of bitterness and frustration. The title literally translates to “Jest of Malice” further emphasizing the dark humor that we sometimes tend to feel when life becomes difficult and confusing. I found the double second steel pans to be a perfect blend of articulation and resonance to create an eerie soundscape filled with tinges of emotional ambiguity. However dark the music becomes though, there is always a subtle feeling of optimism buried in the harmonies. This is to say that no matter what life throws at us, we must always strive to never lose our drive that propels us forward.
