Cognizance is a work born out of a desire for self enlightenment that I had upon entering graduate studies at the University of Nebraska Lincoln in 2017. I wanted to create a work that strives to blend together idioms of Jazz, Brazilian Samba, and more “classical” gestures together into one cohesive work. Through distinctive blends of instruments as well as styles, we create something more evolved, yet still very familiar. In the same spirit, I feel that this work is a reflection of musing on how humanity can continue to grow closer together in the hope of creating new solutions to counter the many problems that we face today. I firmly believe that we will only continue to move forward through deliberate collaboration with those we each perceive to be different than us.
