I had the distinct pleasure of working closely with the Four Stikx Clarinet Quartet to create this work, which is my first non-percussive piece. Through the music I wished to convey how each of the individuals in ensemble hold a unique identity that is unchanging and separate from everyone else while simultaneously being able to "converse" or synthesize together in the ensemble. When performing together all four members would wearing different colored hairbows and a matching pair of colored converse shoes. The color of each hairbow/shoe ended up being the inspiration for each movement.
I feel that “Conversial Hairbows” symbolizes as a whole how each of us can retain our individuality and our unique identity while uniting with others to fulfill our common goals and overcome any obstacle that is set before us.
