for Double Reed Sextet
(2 Oboes, English Horn, 2 Bassoons, Contrabassoon) Commissioned by Daniel Baldwin I've always considered the double reed instruments to be incredibly agile yet powerful instruments, and so I wanted to construct a work that could showcase their almost mechanical precision while also demonstrating their ability to work cohesively as a unit. When I considered the double reed sextet, I had a mental vision of a sort of musical engine that could roar and yet still be a mechanical wonder to behold with many small internal parts working together in harmony. This piece is the result of that vision.
