for Symphony Orchestra (2+1, 2+1, 2+1, 2+1; 4,3,2+1,1; strings, timp, 3 perc, clste, pno)
Tempest, as the name implies, is an aural conjuring of a chaotic storm. In particular, the tempest referenced in this work is one felt during severe heartache after the loss of a loved one or the destruction of a relationship. During such a time, different emotions and impressions seem to blur together and erupt violently at will. Beauty and reflection is juxtaposed with anger, agony, and even madness. Upon reflection of personal stories from friends, family, and colleagues as well as my own personal experiences, my aim was to create a work that could encapsulate all of these emotional trials into a symphonic short story. This story is one we have all lived: coping with the pain of a wounded spirit, reflection upon the past, pondering the future, and wrestling with the concepts of acceptance and forgiveness.
